Guidelines for Travel Awards in IBC Years
This document outlines the procedure to be used to fund travel for IBS members from Lower- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) (https://data.worldbank.org/income-level/low-and-middle-income?view=chart) who seek to participate in the International Biometric Conference (IBC).
Award Amount:
Up to $3,000 USD for travel, lodging and registration expenses to attend the International Biometric Conference (IBC). Funding will be granted on even numbered years.
Eligibility:
- Applicant must be an IBS member at the time of application and for at least 12 months prior to the date of application.
- Applicant must be residing in a Lower-or-Middle Income Country (LMIC) at the time of the application. Lower- or Middle-Income Countries are defined by the World Bank as countries classified as low- and middle-income countries. A list is on the World Bank website (see: https://data.worldbank.org/income-level/low-and-middle-income?view=chart).
- Previous Travel Fund award winners may apply if the award was not made in the previous four years. However, preference will be given to those who have not received a travel award in the past.
- The conference to be attended must be the next regularly scheduled International Biometric Conference.
- An applicant does need to have applied for an oral or poster presentation. Travel funding will only be awarded to those that have been chosen to present their presentation at the IBC.
The Application Process:
The IBS travel awards program, made available through the financial support of the International Biometric Society, IBS Regions, and individuals, provides assistance to only IBS members from a Lower-or-Middle Income Country (LMIC) to attend an IBC. IBC2020 will be held in Seoul, Korea, 5-10, July 2020.
In recent years, the awards program has become quite competitive. Recipients of the award will receive funds to cover conference registration fees, accommodations, airfare and/or meals. However, grants will not exceed $3,000.00 USD per person. Maximum grant awards of $3,000.00 USD are not guaranteed, and actual distributions may be less than this amount. Grant winners are expected to cover the difference between actual expenses and the amount awarded.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be a current member of IBS residing in an LMIC.
- You must have submitted an abstract in response to the IBC2020 Call for Contributed Papers.
- You must not have received grant funding from the IBS within the past four years (inclusive of IBC2016 of IBC2018 or for the non-IBC year).

Once you have completed the online application, please submit your membership verification to abignall@biometricsociety.org. This may be in the form of your emailed receipt or welcome letter (e-mail) from your Region Administrator.
Review Criteria:
All applications will be reviewed and evaluated using the following criteria:
- Length of IBS membership
- Participation in Society activities at group, regional and/or international level
- Academic and professional activity
- Availability of other funding
- Professional reference
Notification:
All applicants will receive an email notification by April 2020 regarding the final status of their application.
