Young Statistician Showcase Competition

How to Apply?  Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants should be registered for a graduate or postgraduate degree program or have graduate with one of these degrees no earlier than 1 January 2017
  • Papers submitted must be no longer than four pages and must contain original work that has not yet been published, has not been the subject of any other award and is predominantly the student's own work. The applicant must also be the leading author of the paper. 
  • Applications' analyses qualify only if the analysis has methodological implications or shows a novel and interesting application of statistics to an area of the biosciences, including health, agriculture or ecology. 
  • Only one paper per student will be accepted.  Only presentation types of "oral only", "oral preference" or "oral/poster (no preference)" will be considered.  Applicants should be members (including student members) of the International Biometric Society. 

All those interested in applying should following these instructions:

  1. Submit their contributed paper abstract via the IBC 2020 abstract submission site (https://ibc2020.abstractcentral.com) indicating their desire to apply to the Young Statisticians' Showcase competition. 
  2. Applicants should submit a copy (pdf) of their submitted paper no later than one (1) week after the abstract submission deadline, 19 January 2020 to conference@biometricsociety.org.
  3. Papers must be at most four pages (single space, 11pt font). This should include all figures, tables and a brief bibliography.
  4. The applicant must also attach a letter from their supervisor (or former supervisor) on official letterhead of the student's institution, confirming that the student is registered for (or obtained since the beginning of 2017) a graduate or post-graduate degree, and that the paper to be presented is original, neither previously published nor the subject of any previous award and is predominantly the student's own work. 
  5. The applicant should also attach a short statement of the importance of participation in IBC 2020 to their research and career development (no more than 500 words)
Selection Process:

All submitted papers will be reviewed by a committee of at least five judges. Five papers, one from each of the five continental areas (Africa, Asia & Australasia, Europe, North America and South America), will be selected based on the following criteria: clarity, innovation, methodology and application aspects, in addition to submitted supporting documents. Each paper will be independently judged by at least two judges. 

Awardees will be informed before the end of February 2020 and will be asked to prepare an oral presentation for the IBC 2020 Young Statisticians' Showcase Session. If any awardee is unable to attend, the committee will have the option to select another applicant.
