Summer School in Genetic Epidemiology, Davos 2024
Join us from June 13 to June 15, 2024, at the picturesque Medicine Campus Davos for an intensive course in Genetic Epidemiology. Enhance your knowledge of molecular genetics, genotyping technologies, study designs, statistical methods, and much more.
For more information and to register, visit www.cardio-care.ch/training or email info@cardio-care.ch
Overview
Thanks to the increasing throughput of sequencing technologies, it is now possible to genotype thousands of people as part of a genetic association study. The design of such studies and the analysis of the resulting data require advanced knowledge of biology, statistics, and computer science. This course provides a foundation in genetic epidemiology to equip participants to work with large human genetic datasets.
Audience
- Biologists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, computer scientists about to start a genetic association study, e.g., a whole-genome association study (GWAS).
- Scientists interested in learning more about genetic epidemiology
Learning Objectives
- Basics of molecular genetics
- Study design for association analysis: case-control, cohort, and quantitative traits
- Population stratification and cryptic relatedness
- Genetic markers and their characteristics
- Genotyping technologies like TaqMan, microarrays, and sequencing
- Quality control in genotyping
- Association analyses, estimate genetic effects
- Multiple testing
- Rare variant analysis
- Biological interpretation of genetic variants
- Optional: Haplotype-based analyses
- Optional: Sample sizes for association studies
- Optional: Mendelian randomization studies
Prerequisites
Knowledge/competencies Participants should have a level of knowledge in biology, statistics, and computer science equivalent to that of a high-school certificate. Ongoing or finished studies in university-level biology, statistics, or computer science would be beneficial but are optional.
